Prägende Begriffe aus der jüngeren Debatte sind beispielsweise die Zukunft der Arbeit einschließlich ihrer sozialpolitischen Auswirkungen („Industrie 4.0“) oder die staatliche und private Überwachung der Internetnutzung („Snowden-Affäre“). In Deutschland wird im Anschluss an die Enquete-Kommission Internet und digitale Gesellschaft des Deutschen Bundestags sowie an die Digitale Agenda der deutschen Bundesregierung und der Europäischen Union zunehmend auch von Digitalpolitik gesprochen.
